How to care for wooden windows ?

Wood is a slightly more demanding material than PVC or aluminium. However, wooden windows provide a unique visual effect and, with proper care and regular maintenance, will remain beautiful while ensuring excellent thermal insulation for many years. So, how should you properly care for wooden windows ?

Regular cleaning of glass and frames

While cleaning the glass is usually not a problem thanks to the wide range of available products and well-known natural methods, cleaning the frames of wooden windows often raises many questions. Care should begin with removing dust, preferably using water with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft cloth or sponge. Once the frames are clean and dry, it is recommended to apply a wood care paste or milk to protect and nourish the surface.

At the same time, remember to avoid detergents containing ammonia, acetone, or alcohol, as they may damage or discolour the frames.

To prevent damage to the frames, they should be cleaned at least three times a year

Repairing minor damage

When cleaning your windows — or at least once a year — it is worth paying close attention to whether any minor scratches, cracks in the paint coating, or other types of damage have appeared on the frames. If so, the damaged surface should first be smoothed with sandpaper with a grit between 200 and 400. The next step is to carefully apply a new paint or lacquer coating according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Every few years, it is advisable to carry out this type of maintenance on the entire frame.

Already at the stage of purchasing wooden windows, it is a good idea to ask the supplier which lacquer or paint they recommend for frame maintenance. Also remember to ask for the colour name or reference number of the product used for your order.

Seals and moving parts

When cleaning or maintaining the frames, it is important — especially after winter — to check the condition of the seals and all moving parts. Moving components should also be cleaned and lubricated. For this purpose, you can use special hardware maintenance products or petroleum jelly. If any damage is noticed, it is best to seek professional assistance to replace the damaged component or worn seal.
