How to restore wooden windows – step by step

Wooden windows have a unique charm – they bring warmth, natural character, and elegance into interiors that cannot be compared with plastic or aluminium constructions. It is wood that gives a home a cosy atmosphere and makes rooms feel more harmonious and welcoming. However, in order for windows to maintain their appearance and performance for many years, they require proper care. Under the influence of sunlight, moisture, and temperature changes, the wooden surface gradually loses its freshness. The protective coating may become dull, the paint starts to peel, and small cracks may appear on the frame. This is a natural ageing process of the material, which does not mean that the windows need to be replaced. In most cases, thorough restoration is sufficient – renewing the coatings, filling in any losses, and re-protecting the wood against external factors. The good news is that such renovation can be carried out on your own, without the need to call in specialists. No special tools or advanced skills are required. A bit of time, a basic set of materials – sandpaper, wood preservative, paint or varnish – and a few simple steps are enough to restore the former beauty of wooden windows.

Assess the condition of windows

If the wood is only slightly dull or the varnish has worn off lightly, refreshing the coating will be sufficient. Deeper cracks or peeling paint indicate that more thorough sanding and repainting will be necessary.

Clean and sand the surface

The first practical step is to thoroughly clean the window frames. Remove dust, dirt, and any remaining old varnish or paint. It is best to use a mild detergent and a soft sponge for this, and once the surface is dry, proceed to sanding. If the old coating is heavily peeling, you can use sandpaper (grit 100–150) or an orbital sander. Remember to remove all dust after sanding – for example with a damp cloth or a vacuum cleaner.

Repair gaps and cracks

Small scratches or cracks can be filled with a special wood filler. After it dries, sand off any excess material to achieve a smooth surface. If you notice larger damage, it is better to use a harder repair compound or wood adhesive.

Protect the wood with a preservative

Before applying paint or varnish, it is worth using a protective wood preservative. It will protect the wood against moisture, mould, and pests. Choose a product designed for window joinery and apply it with a brush in the direction of the grain. Allow it to dry thoroughly.

Painting or varnishing

Apply 2 thin coats of paint or varnish, allowing time between each layer. You can choose a clear varnish, a wood stain (glaze), or an opaque paint, depending on the effect you want to achieve.

Pay attention to details

After finishing painting, thoroughly clean and lubricate the hardware – hinges, handles, and moving parts. Replace seals if they are worn or cracked. This will ensure that the windows operate smoothly and close tightly throughout the winter.
